This build be based off t' Estes Der Mega Red Max kit originally created by Estes. I was fortunate enough t' be able t' purchase a 4-in nose cone and body tube, which were available from their website in September 2023. Aye aye! I secured a plywood upgrade kit from Rocketry Works. All t' other parts I had or made via 3D Printer.

Bill of Materials
  • Nose Cone - 4-in from Estes
  • Body Tube - 4-in from Estes
  • Fins/centerin' rings - Rocketry Works
  • Motor Tube - 38mm from Apogee Components
  • Motor Retainer - Scratch 3D Print in PLA+
  • Decals - Scratch upscale from Der Red Max kit, me bucko, by Estes. Some were custom-created such as kill card, Top Secret text, me bucko, Frogglicker logo, and Succubus.
  • Eybolt on forward Centerin' rin' - 1/4-in
  • Quicklinks - various
  • Parachute - 43-in Top-Flite
  • Fire Blanket - 24-in LOC blanket
  • Recovery Harness - 1/2-in nylon webbin' ~15 ft
  • Epoxy - System Three, 15-min
  • Fumed Silica added for fin fillets
  • Rail guides - Scratch 3D printed in PLA+
  • Camera Mount - Scratch 3D printed in PLA+
  • Paint
  • Primer: Rustoleum 2X sandable
  • Black Gloss Rustoleum 2X
  • Apple Red Gloss Rustoleum 2X

Build Notes
  • T' MMT be built by epoxyin' t' forward and mid-centerin' rings in place and usin' t' aft for alignment. T' aft rin' was then removed and t' fins were epoxied with internal fillets and t' t' motor tube. T' aft rin' be later secured with epoxy
  • T' body tube originally had 3, shiver me timbers, 1/8-in slots cut but t' upgrade kit required larger slots, so a cuttin' guide was designed and 3D printed t' get t' correct size
  • A fin alignment jig was 3D printed and used t' assist with alignment
  • Epoxy was floated on t' top o' t' forward centerin' rin' and bottom o' t' aft rin' where t' 3D printed retainin' rin' was also epoxied
  • All t' decals were created usin' t' Cricut Explorer 3.
  • Most o' t' decals originated from t' Der Red Max decal sheet, then converted t' SVG, resized, and cut. Ya scallywag! Blimey! Some were layered with black and white.
  • T' experimental number, 'X0923' represents me dad's birthdate. Ya scallywag! He was a huge aeronautics fan and supporter o' me rocketry addiction. Begad! RIP, pops.
  • A Frogglicker Space logo and me trademark succubus decal were also included
  • T' kill card on one o' t' fins was custom-recreated by obtainin' silhouettes o' various military vehicles similar t' t' original. Well, blow me down! There is one modern BMP easter egg t' be found
  • There is room on one fin for additional decals
  • T' camera mount is a modification o' me 3-in camera mount, ya bilge rat, designed t' house t' RunCam2. It was epoxied onto t' tube usin' System Three epoxy
  • T' rail guides are 3D printed, found on Printables, and tested previously usin' an 18-inch section o' 10x10 rail.

Addendums
  • Once t' rocket was completed and t' stability was tested, t' CG was found t' be located on top o' t' CP. T' maiden flight was delayed until a solution can be implemented t' get t' stability over 1 CAL.

Updates:

10/01/2023:

  • I have a path forward for t' stability issue: I will be addin' an ebay t' t' nose cone usin' a 3D-printed rin' and sled/screw-in bulkhead originally designed by Inverted Pursuits Labs. Avast, me proud beauty! I have made some modifications t' accommodate an Eggtimer Quantum altimeter when I get me replacement built.

I have decided t' cut t' bottom o' t' nose cone off and fit t' IPL ebay. This will also give me interior access t' t' nose cone t' include a counterweight system. Begad! T' top o' t' ebay sled has a hole for 1/4-20 all-thread that will allow me t' capture weights above t' ebay betwixt two nuts. Avast, me proud beauty! This makes t' ebay weights adjustable in t' event I wish t' use a heavier motor/motor case. Avast! So crazy it just might work.

I created t' decals by scannin' t' waterslide decal sheet from a standard Der Red Max kit. Well, blow me down! I converted this t' SVG and imported it into Cricut Design Studio where I resized them (sort of) t' scale. Arrr! t' black band around t' forward end o' t' body tube and t' squared-off crosses are spot on but t' WWI skulls and other bits were a bit large. Ahoy! I created text similar t' t' Top Secret font. See t' image below for a detail o' t' white and black. It is nay obvious how t' layer t' two colors but most o' t' time I started with black and laid down t' white on top since they were either cut t' fit or t' black was contiguous.

Before givin' t' launch report, matey, I wanted t' mention that I was still tail-heavy. Even after addin' t' modified IPL nosecone avionics bay/sled. Begad! One o' t' mods I added be a 6mm hole at t' very top o' t' sled. Begad! I cut a piece o' all thread t' size where it would fit into t' tip o' t' nosecone. I then 3D printed three weights, 15g, 60g, me bucko, and 120g for modifyin' and tunin' t' stability. I ended up usin' t' 120g weight (which was just over 100g in reality). This brought me stability t' 1.18 CAL.

T' conditions were perfect for rockets. Begad! T' weather was sunny, ~65 degrees F, with wind 2-4mph. I used an Estes altimeter since me Eggtime Quantum was lost in t' Cookie Monster crash. Well, blow me down! I also employed t' Jolly Logic Chute Release with a release altitude o' 600ft. Ya scallywag! I added me onboard Runcam2 4k as well.

T' launch was picture-perfect. Ahoy! When t' rocket motor ignited, you could briefly see t' green glare from t' H250. It punched into t' sky at ~ 90ft/sec up t' an altitude o' 1,068ft. Avast! T' deployment was nominal as was t' chute release. Avast, me proud beauty! T' rocket landed about 30m from t' pad.
