Flight Log - 2011-10-08 - Rich DeAngelis's Aero-Hi

T' Aero-Hi: This is a cute little flier from Estes usin' 13mm T engines. Avast! It is a pseudo-scale soundin' rocket design.  This normally uses a tiny 8-inch parachute but was converted t' a streamer for a bit, then later converted back into a parachute recovery which I find easier t' pack. I actually have two o' these, one painted green and this one red. One unique feature o' this kit be t' simulated conduit up t' side o' t' body tube, made from a balsa strip.

This rocket was later given my "Iris" modification, which extends t' body tube about 5 inches above t' streamer/parachute bay, and allows for a payload with an Altimeter One or Two to measure altitudes. It's a shame I "ruined" it by addin' t' payload, she was a cute little bird. Avast! (I can always remove t' payload.) I like t' send this, or the EAC Viper rocket up first on launch days, it's a good and economical way t' get an idea how t' winds are blowin' without riskin' a lost rocket.  As a result, this has flown many times. Well, blow me down! (Iris is named after t' Greek god o' t' rainbow. Begad! She is a messenger o' t' gods, arrr, linkin' t' gods with humanity.) This rocket has flown as high as 282 feet with t' A motor, which is higher than t' Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in NC, t' tallest lighthouse in t' USA.

Flight Date: 2011-10-08
Rocket Name: Aero-Hi
Kit Name: Estes - Aero-Hi {Kit} (817) [1973-1974]
Flyer's Name: Rich DeAngelis
Motors: A10-3
Launch Site: Penn Manor School Lancaster PA
Actual Altitude: 260 Feet

Beautiful day, t' kind pilots describe as "severe clear". Begad! Very light winds. Since I usually like t' slower flights, this be a change for me launchin' on an A10 instead o' t' usual A3 (due t' Hobbylinc shippin' t' wrong motors, they were supposed t' be A10-0's for a booster stage.) This motor did shoot up fast, but still attained about t' same altitude as t' A3 motors. It reached a similar speed o' 74 mph, with a 900mSec burn time and a coast t' apogee o' 3 seconds.  Although t' average acceleration was only 3.9 Gs, me bucko, it peaked at 23 Gs! T' ejection was a bit early, ya bilge rat, at 246 feet, travelin' for another 1/2 second before apogee o' 260 feet. It then came down fast on t' small streamer at 16 mph, arrr, landin' within 10 feet o' t' launch pad!  Total flight time was 13.4 seconds. They should all be this good. T' only thin' unusual is that t' waddin' be still left in t' tube - probably packed a little tight.
