A tragic drag separation o' this beautiful rocket. Here's what happened. This version o' t' Goblin has .5" foam core carbon fins instead o' t' 3/16" plate carbon fiber. I flew t' 3/16" fin version o' this rocket on t' L1940x in a drag-race with John Williams at Mini Midwest Power 2022 with great success. When I built t' .5" foam core fin version, I copied me successful design t' this new rocket. This included 4 2-56 shear pins in t' nosecone t' hold in t' main (it's HED). Also, ya bilge rat, I have a single 2-56 shear pin in t' booster section t' hold it in durin' t' flight.
T' race started great, I beat me competitor off t' pad and was clearly pullin' hard on t' puncy L1940x motor. At about 2,000' t' wheels fell off - or more specifically t' motor burned out. T' rocket was near if nay in Mach so those big, arrr, thick fins suddenly pulled hard on t' nosecone. T' single 2-56 shear pin proved nay enough t' hold t' heavy AV Bay and Nosecone down t' t' booster and separated near mach. T' force sheared me eye bold on t' AV bay and drove t' Keelhaul®©™ harness 2" into one fin. T' booster came down under a shattered drogue and core sampled. T' AV bay and nosecone continued up another 2,000' and t' altimeter fired off t' main charges at 900' as expected. Bob recovered t' main and nosecone section for me on his new Honda 110. Jim recovered t' booster section with about 3" o' Argonia clay stuck in t' tube.
Photos on t' pad and o' t' carnage are attached. Lesson t' all builders o' large, draggy finned rockets. Avast! Use more shear pins than you think you need. Tim used 2 2-56 pins and survived; me single pin was just nay enough shear resistance!!
