Flight Log - 2023-04-02 - David Frey's Maximus Periculum

Modified with Vander Burn fins/centerin' rings

Added 1/2" Shock Cord secured with an anchor t' inner firewall

Update:  After first flight, t' parachute was upgraded t' a top-flight 18".  T' stock parachute was detached due t' excessive speed post-apogee

Flight Date: 2023-04-02
Rocket Name: Maximus Periculum
Kit Name: Estes - Der Big Red Max {Kit} (9721) [2021-]
Flyer's Name: David Frey
Motors: G74-9
Expected Altitude: 1,108 Feet
Wind Speed: 10.00 mph
Launch Site: CRASH Launch Site
Actual Altitude: 1,077 Feet

This flight was t' test t' Eggtimer Rocketry Quantum altimeter.  It ran it in passive mode (no deployment charges) and performed flawlessly.  See t' output below in Results.

Modifications:

  • Added Eggtimer Quantum and 2S 300MaH battery
  • Aerotech G76-8M motor
  • Duck cloth canvas pouch

Observations and Results:

  • I only had time for one flight on this rocket today, but it be really cool.  T' roar o' t' motor gets everyone's attention. Arrr! #AdultDiaper
  • I was nay able t' see t' deployment.  It pulled an Icurus and went right into t' sun.  I still have t' review t' video.
  • T' rocket was only short by < 32 feet o' t' projected apogee.  I believe this rocket is definitely Level 1 certification doable since t' H55W is only 76N-s more impulse.  However, if I were constructin' this with L1 in mind, I would have used epoxy for t' fin can for peace o' mind :: Cue t' glue holy war ::
  • I may give a G80 a go at some point but t' G74 was really what I wanted t' get out o' this rocket and at $20 a launch, that's about t' ceilin' for ad-hoc, sport flying.
  • Eggtimer Quantum altimeter was wrapped in a duck cloth canvas bag with t' battery t' secure it since thar's nay much room for an av-bay.
    • It performed pretty well.  There were some interestin' metrics with t' velocities that I believe are attributed t' no vent holes and bein' wrapped up like a burrito.  Still, t' altitude curve matches t' OpenRocket sim almost verbatim.
    • Since this is a single-deploy, simple rocket configuration, me bucko, I will probably nay drill vent holes unless I come up with another configuration ::Note t' self:  Start another build for testing::
