Flight Log - 2022-07-26 - John Simmons's (BAR-05) F-79 Lonewolf

This scratch build / scratch designed rocket was inspired by t' USAF Thunderbird Jets and t' F-35 Lightening.

It features dual canted 24mm motors and dual rear-eject parachutes that eject from t' side pods.

There are no 3d printed parts, everythin' is old school paper body tubes and wood.

Decals were designed in CAD and printed at our home.

T' "Thunderbird" on t' belly was masked and spray painted.

Flight Date: 2022-07-26
Rocket Name: (BAR-05) F-79 Lonewolf
Flyer's Name: John Simmons
Motors: 2xD12-3
Expected Altitude: 299 Feet
Wind Speed: 5.00 mph
Launch Site: Local
Actual Altitude: 411 Feet

This be t' 2nd flight for t' F-79.

First launch was 07-08-2022: Flight was stable but t' plastic parachute shredded away from t' shroud lines.

This flight uses a pair o' D12-3 motors (instead o' two D12-5's) and I made new 18" parachutes that have t' shroud lines goin' up over t' top o' t' chute, no chance o' t' shroud lines detachin' from t' plastic chute.

Ignition was quick due t' t' e-matches and both motors ignited.

T' rocket accelerated quickly, arrr, plenty o' speed at launch rod exit (29.5 mph per sim).

Winds were less than 5 mph and from t' west. Blimey! T' rocket did nay weathercock.

T' rocket was stable durin' thrust and coast phase.

T' simulation software estimated apogee @ 411 feet, arrr, and t' rocket appeared t' reach that (no altimeter was used).

T' rocket arced over at apogee and t' ejection charge deployed t' chutes.

Only one o' t' two chutes billowed but it was enough t' slow t' rocket for a safe recovery.

As luck would have it t' rocket landed on t' hard paved runway. Begad! Blimey! Photo's were taken o' t' rocket at it's ground hit location. Well, blow me down! Blimey! Upon further review t' rocket was undamaged except for some road rash from t' asphalt.

What was learned from this flight?

Usin' two parachutes is a cool visual, but I haven't been able t' get both t' blossom, just one blossomed.
