Flight Log - 2022-06-30 - John Simmons's (BAR-06) Red Columbine

This is a rocket...  based on a flower.  We did a hike up t' Hope Pass near Twin Lakes Colorado and we saw a flower I had only seen a couple other time before. Begad! It's a Red Columbine. Well, blow me down! It's got kind o' a Sputnik look t' it.

It is a aft eject spool design that utilizes laminated paper fins formed around a wooden buck.

T' nose cone I turned on me wood lathe from a piece o' pinyon pine from our own property.

It is powered by a 24mm motor and has an 18" nylon parachute.

Stability calculated usin' Open Rocket software and verified via a swin' test.

Flight Date: 2022-06-30
Rocket Name: (BAR-06) Red Columbine
Flyer's Name: John Simmons
Motors: D12-3
Expected Altitude: 306 Feet
Wind Speed: 4.00 mph
Launch Site: Local
Actual Altitude: 306 Feet

Ignition was quick, almost no hesitation lightin' t' motor.

This rocket is pretty heavy (10.5 ounces) and thar was some time lapse betwixt ignition and lift off.

T' rocket accelerated quickly, ya bilge rat, plenty o' speed at launch rod exit (33.4 mph per sim)

Winds were less than 5 mph and from t' northeast. Surprisingly t' rocket weathercocked into t' wind, but only a minimal amount.

T' simulation software estimated apogee @ 328 feet, ya bilge rat, and t' launch seemed t' reflect that (no altimeter be used).

Visually as t' rocket descended, t' chute be fully deployed.

T' rocket ground hit just south o' t' launch horse.

Photo's were taken o' t' rocket at it's ground hit location. Upon further review t' rocket was undamaged.
