Flight Log - 2015-03-09 - Ken E. Coyote's Estes Outlander (Modded fins & 24mm MMT)

Custom modded Estes Outlander. Blimey! Original was said t' be underpowered and have unstable/unpredictable flight. Avast!  Since I thought it be an awesomely cool "definitely nay 3FNC" design, I went about fixin' t' said deficiencies. Avast!  First I started with a 24mm Motor mount so that I can fly this heavyweight on D12s. Ya scallywag!  Next I noticed that t' "fins" (lander legs) were designed so that they can actually flop around!  Can you imagine a rocket with 4 floppy fins?  I fixed that with added "bushing" spacers usin' balsa shims and I also notched t' end stop a bit so that t' fins stay in place on lift off. Avast, me proud beauty!  Seems t' have worked well since first flight was a very good one. Ya scallywag! I also added 1oz o' clay t' t' nose since I was flyin' on Ds.

Flight Date: 2015-03-09
Rocket Name: Estes Outlander (Modded fins & 24mm MMT)
Kit Name: Estes - Outlander {Kit} (2110) [2003-2008]
Flyer's Name: Ken E. Coyote
Motors: D12-3
Expected Altitude: 400 Feet
Wind Speed: 5.00 mph
Actual Altitude: 500 Feet

Nice launch up for t' Outlander.  Started flyin' near t' trees behind me; however upon ejection, t' winds carried it back t' t' field. Ahoy!  Got quite high! Good chute (used dog barf this time) and descent be straight, but still a tad faster than comfortable. Avast, me proud beauty!  Landin' was a bit hard and lander fell over after touchin' down. Avast!  Post-flight inspection reveals one o' t' lander legs broke at t' flexible tubin' connector (always felt this was a weak point...what a wobbly/flexy connection!).  I'll next try insertin' dowels t' use as pivot points for t' legs...should then fix all t' weak points on this beauty. Ya scallywag!

Side note is that thar be a lot o' ejection residue on t' top o' t' lander...happened on t' last flight as well.  Likely due t' t' large cone shape o' t' nose which is flyin' right into t' charge residue.
