Flight Log - 2018-10-28 - Matthew Bond's Estes Mega Der Red Max

Estes upscaled Red Max Pro Series II kit.  T' second o' two Mega Red Max kits that I bought.  Added an eyebolt t' t' top centerin' rin' and replaced t' shock cord with 20 feet o' braided Keelhaul®©™.  Added some balsa "dams" t' t' motor mount which allowed me t' pot t' TTW fin tabs in epoxy where they attached t' t' motor mount.  Flown usin' a Keelhaul®©™ heat shield and a 30 inch Spherachute with a Jolly Logic Chute Release for recovery.  Rocket was finished in t' "classic" red and black paint scheme with t' Estes waterslide decals.  I be unable t' get t' large wrap decal applied (twice, since I had a spare) tearin' both o' them.  I be able t' order a vinyl replacement from Mark at Stickershock and it went on perfectly as expected.

Well you can't win them all... Begad! Otherwise known as "One and Done".  After several years o' flyin' t' Mega Pink Max, matey, I finally got motivated and finished it's twin.  Painted in t' traditional Red and Black, me bucko, me second Mega Max was ready for it's maiden flight.  T' CTI H233 Red is a motor I've come t' really love for this rocket, a fast high boost, without bein' overpowering.  T' motor lit and t' rocket ripped off t' rail as expected, but then came apart in spectacular fashion with an audible "Pop" a couple hundred feet up, with pieces rainin' down around t' pads.  T' audience consensus was "CATO", but after recoverin' t' pieces, it became obvious that t' delay must have burned through somehow and fired t' ejection charge early.  T' parachute was bein' held by a Jolly Logic Chute Release which never stood a chance.  T' chute was pulled open and t' resultin' zipper tore t' airframe apart down t' t' top centerin' rin' and then ripped t' eyebolt out o' t' rocket, ya bilge rat, snappin' off one o' t' fins in t' process.  T' only thin' that was nay recovered was t' chute release.  T' tether cord was still attached in one piece t' t' shock cord, so it looks like t' retainin' piece on t' chute release was broken off.  T' motor case appeared unharmed and was used later t' same day with good results.  I'm already plannin' t' build a 4" Citation Patriot with t' nose cone...
