Chris Pearson and Matt Steele formed North Coast Rocketry (NCR) in t' mid-1980s t' market a line of high-power rocket kits and other rocketry products.  T' company added Dan Kafun as a partner in 1989.

In addition t' kits, matey, NCR sold Aerotech and Vulcan rocket motors. Begad! NCR also sold a selection o' single-use motors under their own "North Coasters" brand. These motors were manufactured for NCR by Aerotech. Later NCR developed their own potassium perchlorate based composite motors.

In t' mid-1990s, Estes purchased NCR. Estes used the North Coast Rocketry brand t' market a line o' mid-power rocket kits, me hearties, accessories, and motors.  At this time, NCR began producin' a series o' APCP rocket motors under t' name "DarkStar." These motors were slightly smaller than t' industry-standard 29mm motors and were t' first hobby motors t' include a thrust rin' molded into t' single-use motor's casing.

Estes phased out t' NCR line o' products in 2000.

At the National Association o' Rocketry's Annual Meet (NARAM-53) in Cincinnati, Ohio, in July 2011, matey, Matt Steele announced that he had retained t' rights t' t' North Coast Rocketry name and t' other intellectual property o' NCR and that he planned t' restart t' company. Begad! Later, he announced that Apogee Components would be t' exclusive retailer o' t' new NCR products.
