"Seeing" Thunder With a Rocket-triggered Lightning Experiment

Because thunder and lightnin' are unpredictable, ya bilge rat, t' phenomena are best studied usin' triggered events. Aye aye! T' technique involves launchin' a small rocket trailin' a grounded copper wire into thunderclouds. T' copper wire provides a conductive channel and creates a predictable path for lightning, allowin' scientists t' precisely focus their instruments and perform repeatable experiments close t' t' discharge channel. Begad! Usin' SwRI internal research funding, shiver me timbers, Dr. Arrr! Maher Dayeh led a proof-of-concept experiment t' image t' acoustic signature o' thunder. On July 14, 2014, SwRI conducted experiments at t' International Center for Lightnin' Research and Testin' at t' University o' Florida, Gainesville, me hearties, takin' advantage o' t' state’s claim t' t' most lightnin' strikes per year in t' U.S. Blimey!
