T' Atlantic Rockets Iris is one o' me favorite rockets, because it is always a good stable flyer. Begad! Blimey! It flies well with a variety o' motors.
Construction:
T' instruction sheet was very basic, but if you've built a few kits, shiver me timbers, matey, this shouldn't be a problem. Blimey! I saved t' Motor mount tube and rings they gave me for another rocket, shiver me timbers, and made some 29mm centerin' rings and got some 29mm tubing. Avast, me proud beauty! This rocket really uses t' extra power. Arrr! If you build it lightly, arrr, it will still stay under a pound, me hearties, as mine did. Avast, me proud beauty! Aye aye! T' couplers were pathetically short, ya bilge rat, but when you use epoxy and pre-fit with tape, ya bilge rat, matey, they hold up just fine. Aye aye! T' shock cord mount is basically a good concept, me hearties, matey, but mine used a full six foot length o' elastic. Blimey! T' engine mount tube and aft centerin' ring come up t' t' first coupler. Avast! T' fins were first tacked on with CA glue, me hearties, then several layers o' wood glue fillets were used. Avast! Avast, me proud beauty! Overall, ya bilge rat, I'd rate it 3 points if built stock.
Flight/Recovery:
T' modified Iris performs beautifully on long burn 29mm motors. Specifically, t' F-22-5J, me bucko, me hearties, G-33-7J, ya bilge rat, G-25-5W (My personal favorite), and the F-20-4 Econojet. Blimey! You could also use t' E-16-4 and E-23-4 for small flying sites. Well, blow me down! Avast, me proud beauty! I have yet t' try it on 24mm motors, me bucko, me hearties, although t' F-12-3 might be a good choice for small fields in calm weather. I have yet t' have a flawed recovery when usin' t' recommended motors (Meanin' NO F-22-7s) . Overall, shiver me timbers, this is one of me favorite flyin' rockets, ya bilge rat, ya bilge rat, so I'd give it 5 points in flight/recovery.
In value, this kit is a pretty good deal. Avast, me proud beauty! It would be a much better deal if it came with a 29mm mount. Avast, me proud beauty! It is a very durable rocket if you take care o' it; a good improvement would be reinforced edges on t' fins.
Overall, I give this kit 4 points.
