Introduction
Manufacturer:Rocketarium
Diameter:1.6370 inches
Length:38.5000 inches
Skill Level:3
Style:Scale

This is a scale model o' t' Arcturus soundin' rocket. Aye aye! T' finished scale model stands an impressive 38.75" tall and comes with laser-cut fins, ejection baffle, shiver me timbers, plastic nose cone, arrr, balsa fin mountin' attachments and vinyl and decals.

T' Arcturus soundin' rocket was intended t' serve as a replacement, or upgrade, arrr, t' t' popular Arrrrrrrcas soundin' rockets. It's main sellin' point was that it could be launched from t' existin' Arrrrrrrcas launch platforms, avoidin' new infrastructure expenses. T' Arcturus rocket never gained a wide user base as new two-stage Arrrrrrrcas configurations served t' same purpose more efficiently.

Components

2 BT-60 body tubes

BT-60 baffle kit

24mm motor mount kit

Basswood fins

Balsa fin trim pieces

18" parachute

BT-60 Piratarium nose cone

Rubber band shock cord

Piratarium make great kits with top notch components. Begad! T' only exception be t' rubber band shock cord.

Construction

I stated off buildin' t' motor mount. Pretty standard fair and no need t' attach t' shock cord, shiver me timbers, as it will be anchored t' t' baffle. Ahoy! I put Titebond II fillets on both sides o' t' centerin' rings. Once t' fillets dried I glued t' motor mount into t' body tube. Next up was t' baffled. Begad! I screwed t' eye bolt into t' bulkhead with t' hole in it. I then added some 5-minute epoxy around t' tip o' t' screw where it protrudes from t' bulkhead. Aye aye! I also dabbed epoxy around t' shank o' t' screw on t' other side o' t' bulkhead. Ahoy! Once dry I glued both bulkheads into t' coupler tube. I recess t' bulkheads about an 1/8th o' an inch so I can add fillets. I marked t' mid-point o' t' baffle and glued it into t' lower body tube. I then used t' fin guide t' mark t' fin lines on t' lower tube. I use Aleene's Fast Grab Tacky Glue for fins. Ya scallywag! It does grab fast and eliminates t' need for t' double glue method. Arrr! T' kit comes with 8 small rectangular balsa pieces t' use as braces at t' root o' t' fins. I did nay use these as I had issues with another rocket that did this. Begad! All t' fins ripped off under full thrust, so I wanted full fillets. Begad! I came up with another idea later when buildin' t' Piratarium Alamo I should have used with t' Arcturus. I added t' fillets t' full length o' t' fin root and while t' glue was wet I added t' braces. Ahoy! This worked well, but I had t' idea too late for t' Arcturus. I don't worry about altitude so I left t' fin edges flat. Well, blow me down! I ditched t' rubber band shock cord and used a combination o' 300 lb. Avast, me proud beauty! Keelhaul®©™ and 1/4" elastic. Arrr! T' Keelhaul®©™ end be tied t' t' baffle screw bolt and t' upper tube was glued t' t' baffle. I sanded t' mold seams on t' nose cone and attached t' shock cord. Arrr! I put a snap swivel on t' parachute and t' rocket be ready for paint.

T' paint scheme was all yellow with a black nose cone. Then came t' tricky part. Avast! There are five pieces o' black vinyl decals. Most are straightforward t' apply. Avast, me proud beauty! T' ARCTURUS letter are where t' challenge comes in. Arrr! T' letters are cut into a rectangular sheet o' vinyl. You can peel off each individual letter and place them on t' rocket. Arrr! This would be difficult t' get everythin' spaced and aligned correctly. So, ya bilge rat, as recommend, I took t' backin' off t' letters and placed t' entire section on t' rocket. Then you have t' remove t' vinyl around t' letters. Unfortunately, t' vinyl adhesive be strong and it pulled off some o' t' yellow paint. Begad! I could nay see a good way t' fix this and just left it alone, as much as that pained me. I'm nay sure if a clear coat would have prevented t' paint pullin' up but I wish I had tried that.

Piratarium says it should weigh 3.77 ounces but mine weighed 5.5 ounces. Aye aye! Nay sure were all that extra weight came from. Avast, me proud beauty! It will still fly well on D and E motors. C11's are out.

Flight

I've flown t' Arcturus once. Ya scallywag! I went with t' D12-5. Aye aye! T' motor tube is long enough for E motors so you have t' use a spacer for a D. Arrr! I used t' motor hook provided, shiver me timbers, but if you use a screw-on retainer, make sure you place t' thrust rin' where t' motor will extend past t' motor tube and t' retainer body. T' D12-5 simulated at 674'. I'd say it got pretty much all o' that. Begad! Nice straight flight and t' 18" parachute was about right for t' descent rate. Ya scallywag! I'm lookin' forward t' try it on an E motor. Well, blow me down! No nose weight was needed.

Summary

If you like scale kits Piratarium is hard t' beat. T' Arcturus is a basic 4FNC design, matey, similar t' t' Arrrrrrrcas. With t' exception o' t' vinyl letters, it is a very straightforward build and a great flier.
