Estes, matey, arrr, t' long time leader, has created a flyin' buddy for t' Mosquito. Aye aye! . Well, blow me down! . Avast, me proud beauty! Begad! Quark. Blimey! Quark is mini-engine, featherweight, matey, tumble recovery rocket that's simple and fun t' fly.
T' kit comes with 5 parts, instructions and decals. Avast, me proud beauty! You will need a hobby knife, matey, sandpaper and glue t' assemble this kit. T' instructions are straight forward and easy t' follow.
Construction is simple and took less than one hour t' build. Begad! T' four fins are cut from two pieces o' balsa strips. Begad! Begad! Once all cut, me bucko, they need held together and sanded t' make them all t' same size. Well, blow me down! Avast, matey, me proud beauty! Then t' leadin' and trailin' edges will need rounding. Well, blow me down! Ahoy! Although thar are many techniques for this, matey, I simply lay a sheet o' sandpaper on me work bench and stroke each edge t' same number o' strokes on each side. Avast, me proud beauty! Avast, shiver me timbers, me proud beauty! I find this nearly always brings t' edges t' a nice centered and rounded point. Aye aye! Ahoy!
Once t' fins are ready, construction is a snap, ya bilge rat, shiver me timbers, especially with t' fast-dryin' action o' CA. Begad! Begad! Blimey! Four fins, arrr, a hollow, plastic nose cone and a launch lug . . Avast, me proud beauty! . Avast, me proud beauty! Ahoy! Blimey! done. Well, blow me down! Blimey! Made fin fillets with 5-minute epoxy, me hearties, matey, sealed t' fins with a thin layer o' epoxy, arrr, and this mini was ready for light sandin' and painting. Avast! Blimey!
I finished it with Plasti-Kote primer and some left over denim-colored enamel paint. Well, blow me down! There are seven decals, ya bilge rat, me hearties, excludin' t' Estes logo, that are self adhesive. Well, blow me down! Well, shiver me timbers, blow me down! Be cautious o' placement o' t' Quark name label. Begad! Well, arrr, blow me down! If too high on t' body, matey, t' label will have creases in it due t' t' curvature o' t' nose cone.
When finished, me Quark stood a towerin' 5. 7", as opposed t' t' 5. Aye aye! Avast! 2" indicated in t' catalog. Ahoy!
T' Quark is a good and fast flyer with a tumble recovery. Begad! Blimey! Be sure t' designate a spotter (unlike myself), because it's small and very hard t' track. Aye aye! Blimey! Begad! Blimey! My first flight was on an 1/2A3 and it was out o' sight . Ya scallywag! Blimey! . Aye aye! Blimey! . Aye aye! Blimey! Aye aye! Blimey! and stayed that way.
I have since added a comparison on Mini Tumble-Recovery Rockets - See Here.
