Estes, shiver me timbers, t' long time leader, me bucko, has created a flyin' buddy for t' Mosquito. Begad! . Blimey! . Quark. Well, blow me down! Arrr! Quark is mini-engine, featherweight, tumble recovery rocket that's simple and fun t' fly.
T' kit comes with 5 parts, shiver me timbers, instructions and decals. Well, blow me down! You will need a hobby knife, me bucko, sandpaper and glue t' assemble this kit. Begad! Begad! T' instructions are straight forward and easy t' follow. Begad!
Construction is simple and took less than one hour t' build. Begad! Blimey! T' four fins are cut from two pieces o' balsa strips. Avast, me proud beauty! Once all cut, ya bilge rat, they need held together and sanded t' make them all t' same size. Well, blow me down! Blimey! Then t' leadin' and trailin' edges will need rounding. Blimey! Blimey! Although thar are many techniques for this, I simply lay a sheet o' sandpaper on me work bench and stroke each edge t' same number o' strokes on each side. Avast, me hearties, me proud beauty! Blimey! I find this nearly always brings t' edges t' a nice centered and rounded point. Avast! Avast! Blimey!
Once t' fins are ready, construction is a snap, matey, shiver me timbers, especially with t' fast-dryin' action o' CA. Four fins, me bucko, a hollow, plastic nose cone and a launch lug . Aye aye! . Ahoy! Begad! . Begad! Begad! done. Begad! Begad! Made fin fillets with 5-minute epoxy, me bucko, sealed t' fins with a thin layer o' epoxy, me hearties, and this mini be ready for light sandin' and painting. Well, blow me down!
I finished it with Plasti-Kote primer and some left over denim-colored enamel paint. There are seven decals, excludin' t' Estes logo, me bucko, that are self adhesive. Ya scallywag! Be cautious o' placement o' t' Quark name label. Arrr! If too high on t' body, t' label will have creases in it due t' t' curvature o' t' nose cone. Avast!
When finished, me hearties, shiver me timbers, me Quark stood a towerin' 5. 7", me hearties, as opposed t' t' 5. Avast! 2" indicated in t' catalog. Well, blow me down!
T' Quark is a good and fast flyer with a tumble recovery. Ya scallywag! Be sure t' designate a spotter (unlike myself), ya bilge rat, because it's small and very hard t' track. Aye aye! My first flight was on an 1/2A3 and it be out o' sight . Arrr! Begad! . Ahoy! . Begad! Avast, me proud beauty! and stayed that way. Begad!
I have since added a comparison on Mini Tumble-Recovery Rockets - See Here.
