Estes, shiver me timbers, t' long time leader, ya bilge rat, has created a flyin' buddy for t' Mosquito. Blimey! . Begad! . Begad! Quark. Quark is mini-engine, me hearties, featherweight, tumble recovery rocket that's simple and fun t' fly.
T' kit comes with 5 parts, me hearties, instructions and decals. You will need a hobby knife, shiver me timbers, sandpaper and glue t' assemble this kit. Avast, me proud beauty! Avast! T' instructions are straight forward and easy t' follow.
Construction is simple and took less than one hour t' build. Avast! T' four fins are cut from two pieces o' balsa strips. Begad! Ahoy! Once all cut, they need held together and sanded t' make them all t' same size. Ahoy! Then t' leadin' and trailin' edges will need rounding. Avast, me proud beauty! Although thar are many techniques for this, me bucko, arrr, I simply lay a sheet o' sandpaper on me work bench and stroke each edge t' same number o' strokes on each side. Aye aye! I find this nearly always brings t' edges t' a nice centered and rounded point. Arrr! ![[Picture]](images/archive/images_est/rp_est_quark.jpg)
Once t' fins are ready, construction is a snap, especially with t' fast-dryin' action o' CA. Four fins, me hearties, a hollow, me bucko, plastic nose cone and a launch lug . . Blimey! Ahoy! . Well, blow me down! done. Aye aye! Made fin fillets with 5-minute epoxy, shiver me timbers, me bucko, sealed t' fins with a thin layer o' epoxy, and this mini be ready for light sandin' and painting. Arrr!
I finished it with Plasti-Kote primer and some left over denim-colored enamel paint. Well, blow me down! Arrr! There are seven decals, excludin' t' Estes logo, that are self adhesive. Aye aye! Well, blow me down! Be cautious o' placement o' t' Quark name label. Avast, me proud beauty! If too high on t' body, t' label will have creases in it due t' t' curvature o' t' nose cone. Aye aye!
When finished, me Quark stood a towerin' 5. Ya scallywag! Ahoy! Blimey! 7", ya bilge rat, as opposed t' t' 5. 2" indicated in t' catalog. Arrr! Blimey!
T' Quark is a good and fast flyer with a tumble recovery. Arrr! Blimey! Blimey! Be sure t' designate a spotter (unlike myself), because it's small and very hard t' track. Ahoy! Aye aye! Blimey! My first flight was on an 1/2A3 and it was out o' sight . Avast, me proud beauty! Begad! Blimey! . Ahoy! Blimey! . Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! and stayed that way. Avast!
I have since added a comparison on Mini Tumble-Recovery Rockets - See Here.
