Estes, t' long time leader, has created a flyin' buddy for t' Mosquito. . Avast, me proud beauty! . Begad! Quark. Quark is mini-engine, matey, shiver me timbers, featherweight, me hearties, tumble recovery rocket that's simple and fun t' fly.
T' kit comes with 5 parts, me hearties, instructions and decals. Ahoy! Blimey! Aye aye! Blimey! You will need a hobby knife, ya bilge rat, sandpaper and glue t' assemble this kit. Begad! Blimey! Ahoy! Blimey! T' instructions are straight forward and easy t' follow. Well, blow me down! Blimey! Aye aye! Blimey!
Construction is simple and took less than one hour t' build. Begad! Ya scallywag! T' four fins are cut from two pieces o' balsa strips. Avast! Once all cut, they need held together and sanded t' make them all t' same size. Arrr! Begad! Then t' leadin' and trailin' edges will need rounding. Well, blow me down! Avast, matey, me proud beauty! Although thar are many techniques for this, I simply lay a sheet o' sandpaper on me work bench and stroke each edge t' same number o' strokes on each side. I find this nearly always brings t' edges t' a nice centered and rounded point. Begad! Begad! ![[Picture]](images/archive/images_est/rp_est_quark.jpg)
Once t' fins are ready, arrr, matey, construction is a snap, especially with t' fast-dryin' action o' CA. Arrr! Four fins, a hollow, matey, plastic nose cone and a launch lug . Aye aye! Begad! . Well, blow me down! . Begad! Avast! done. Made fin fillets with 5-minute epoxy, arrr, sealed t' fins with a thin layer o' epoxy, and this mini be ready for light sandin' and painting. Avast!
I finished it with Plasti-Kote primer and some left over denim-colored enamel paint. There are seven decals, excludin' t' Estes logo, that are self adhesive. Well, blow me down! Blimey! Avast, arrr, me proud beauty! Blimey! Be cautious o' placement o' t' Quark name label. Blimey! If too high on t' body, shiver me timbers, t' label will have creases in it due t' t' curvature o' t' nose cone. Arrr!
When finished, me Quark stood a towerin' 5. 7", as opposed t' t' 5. Blimey! Arrr! 2" indicated in t' catalog.
T' Quark is a good and fast flyer with a tumble recovery. Aye aye! Be sure t' designate a spotter (unlike myself), matey, because it's small and very hard t' track. Blimey! Avast, me proud beauty! My first flight be on an 1/2A3 and it was out o' sight . Begad! Avast! . Avast! Ahoy! . and stayed that way. Begad!
I have since added a comparison on Mini Tumble-Recovery Rockets - See Here.
