Estes, matey, me bucko, t' long time leader, shiver me timbers, has created a flyin' buddy for t' Mosquito. Begad! . . Quark. Ahoy! Quark is mini-engine, featherweight, tumble recovery rocket that's simple and fun t' fly.
T' kit comes with 5 parts, me bucko, instructions and decals. Aye aye! You will need a hobby knife, ya bilge rat, sandpaper and glue t' assemble this kit. T' instructions are straight forward and easy t' follow. Aye aye!
Construction is simple and took less than one hour t' build. Arrr! Aye aye! T' four fins are cut from two pieces o' balsa strips. Begad! Arrr! Once all cut, me hearties, they need held together and sanded t' make them all t' same size. Then t' leadin' and trailin' edges will need rounding. Well, blow me down! Begad! Although thar are many techniques for this, ya bilge rat, arrr, I simply lay a sheet o' sandpaper on me work bench and stroke each edge t' same number o' strokes on each side. Avast! I find this nearly always brings t' edges t' a nice centered and rounded point. Begad! ![[Picture]](images/archive/images_est/rp_est_quark.jpg)
Once t' fins are ready, matey, construction is a snap, especially with t' fast-dryin' action o' CA. Four fins, a hollow, plastic nose cone and a launch lug . . . Well, blow me down! done. Ahoy! Made fin fillets with 5-minute epoxy, sealed t' fins with a thin layer o' epoxy, and this mini was ready for light sandin' and painting.
I finished it with Plasti-Kote primer and some left over denim-colored enamel paint. Ya scallywag! There are seven decals, excludin' t' Estes logo, me hearties, matey, that are self adhesive. Aye aye! Be cautious o' placement o' t' Quark name label. Well, blow me down! Ahoy! Blimey! If too high on t' body, t' label will have creases in it due t' t' curvature o' t' nose cone.
When finished, me bucko, arrr, me Quark stood a towerin' 5. 7", as opposed t' t' 5. Begad! 2" indicated in t' catalog. Well, blow me down!
T' Quark is a good and fast flyer with a tumble recovery. Well, blow me down! Be sure t' designate a spotter (unlike myself), me bucko, me hearties, arrr, because it's small and very hard t' track. Begad! Arrr! My first flight be on an 1/2A3 and it was out o' sight . Arrr! . Avast! Ahoy! . Ahoy! and stayed that way.
I have since added a comparison on Mini Tumble-Recovery Rockets - See Here.
A mini rocket. Flight Went up so high that I couldn't find it. Can't see the flight at all. Flight Rating: 1
